If you missed the 1997 AAOMS Seattle meeting, don't worry. We're in Microsoft country. "Where would you like to go today?" Thanks to Bill we will take you there. The AAOMS tours that I have attended have always been filled to capacity with participants and scenic beauty. This year's tours were no exception. However, selecting the right tour became a process of elimination. Let's review the choices:
"Seattle City Highlights" Sounded nice, but city cab rides can fill that role for me. Besides , I was in Seattle for the 1984 NCAA Final Four when our UK WILDCATS played the dogs of Georgetown, and I still become nauseated thinking about the Emerald City. Rumor on the street is they are going to demolish the King Dome. No, I don't want to buy a brick. I saw a lot of them in 84. That game was a nightmare.
"Boeing Tour" Well! To tell it like it is. My rear-end was still numb from flying from Nashville. I really did not want to see another jet airplane anytime soon. In talking with O.J. Hill he reported that it really wasn't that bad a tour considering he took the tour without paying the $ 62.00 fee . Jerry and Becky's USAir flight from Charlotte was running low on fuel so they made a pit stop at Boeing Field, tanked-up, then fired up the engines for the two minute flight to Seattle-Tacoma (SeaTac) International.
"Kayaking on Lake Union" Sounded too much like a work-out. Not being a good swimmer also had its role in a negative response. The way the weather started out, I thought we would be kayaking in the streets. The tour literature was quoted to say that one would "experience a duck's eye view" of the lake. It did not take long for the ladies to give this one the "ole thumbs down".
"The Art of Glassblowing with Lunch" Blowing one's lunch came to my mind when reading about this tour. No way!
"Bicycling to Columbia Winery" The planning committee must be on a health kick. Thirty-six miles round-trip made this easy. No way! Besides, this one could be dangerous. Who would be the designated driver?
"Cascade Day Hike" Who planned these tours? Alpine scenery is fine, but I'll take Alpine Skiing to walking any day.
"Winery Tour" Now we're talking. Thirty-six miles via Charter (designated driver) Bus. A ride along Lake Washington on the scenic Burke Gilman Trail, catching a glimpse of the #6 Washington Huskies playing #3 Nebraska. So, that is why all those husky corn-fed men and ladies were wearing red hats and shirts all over town. Free wine tasting with a ride back to the hotel. Book it!
"Independent Victoria Day Trip"A day long tour of "Old English" Victoria, British Columbia with a two hour cruise aboard the James Bond "ThunderBall" " Victoria Clipper IV". Vince, Arline, Joe, Colleen, Jerry, Becky, Bill, Chap, Debbie, and I said . Yessss! Passport or photo ID required.
Victoria is a very eloquent city and the famous Butchart Gardens' beauty is unmatched in North America. Butchart Gardens is a 130 acre floral extravaganza created by Jennie and Robert Butchart in 1921. The Butchart's Portland cement company was centered around their limestone quarry. When the quarry was exhausted, Mrs. Butchart conceived her idea of a Sunken Garden. Tons of top soil was relocated by horse drawn carts to create the beds. One million people visit each year.
Jolly Ole England, you say? The elegant "high tea" at the "Empress Hotel" impressed Bill, Jerry, and me with its high price. ( $29.00 per person ) To the ladies chagrin we passed on that one. You can take the boys out of the country, but you can't take the country out of the boys.
